Limiting Excessive Barking
Training tips to make your dog bark when he should, but not without reason.

For the first two to four months, never tell you dog to be quiet unless you first check to see what the dog is barking at.

If your dog is barking at something acceptable, praise him.

If it is something unacceptable, tell him "QUIET!" in a firm command tone and wait a few seconds. If he's still quiet, praise him!

If your dog continues to bark, vigorously shake an empty soda can filled with 25-30 pennies as you say "QUIET!" in a firm command tone. Again, wait a few seconds.

If your dog still continues to bark, say "NO!" and repeat the can-shaking correction. If your dog stops barking, praise him.

Have patience! This technique takes time.

It is very important to not reward your dog?s unacceptable barking by letting him inside or petting him. These rewards only encourage your dog to bark.

Excessive barking is not easy behavior to eliminate. Barking is a very normal and strong behavior in dogs, and some breeds are naturally predisposed to bark a lot. Patience and consistency equal success!

If all else fails, there are products available such as bark collars.
