RICHARD A. HAFFEY 
County Executive Officer (CEO) Richard A. Haffey has been a member of the Nevada County executive team since 1999. Rick was appointed CEO in January 2003 after more than two years as Assistant CEO. Prior to moving to the executive office, he spent a year at his first Nevada County position as Chief Fiscal/Administrative Officer of the Human Services Agency.
Rick brings over 30 years of public sector experience to Nevada County government, including perspectives from positions as an appointed manager, an elected official, and manager of a non-profit community partner. He was the City Manager for the City of Belmont, as well as Interim Police Chief and Finance Director. He also served for 12 years as an elected official including being twice the Mayor of the City of South San Francisco and as an elected school board member.
Rick has a belief that education is a life long process. As such, in addition to a Bachelor of Arts Degree, Master of Science Degree and a high school teaching credential, Rick has recently completed the Nevada County Community Leadership Institute, the University of California, Berkeley Executive Institute and the Senior Executive Institute at the University of Virginia. He also holds an ICMA (International City/County Management Association) Credentialed Manager Certification. One of only three held by County Managers in California.
Rick lives (along with his wife and daughter) in Alta Sierra. He has been active in the local community having served on the Board of Directors of various community groups including the Nevada County Arts Council, the Economic Resources Council and United Way of Nevada County. Rick has a passion for American history. He also plays golf very poorly.
