The Nevada County District Attorney is located in two offices. One office is in Nevada City. The other office is in Truckee. There is one full time Deputy District Attorney and a full time clerical support staff of two in Truckee. In Nevada City, there are nine full time Deputy District Attorneys and an Assistant District Attorney, three full-time investigators, two part-time investigators, as well as, a clerical staff of eleven who support them. The investigators can also be assigned to Truckee cases.

The People elect the District Attorney for a four-year term of office. The staff, with the exception of the Assistant District Attorney, is selected and promoted under Civil Service Rules.

The primary responsibility of the District Attorney's Office is the prosecution of felony and misdemeanor offenses that are referred by law enforcement agencies. Specialized vertical prosecution units have been established to handle Child Abuse, driving under the influence cases, auto theft cases, drug cases, spousal abuse, sexual assault, and Statutory Rape. The office also has an NSF Bad Check Program. (note: the related sections for each of these topics are listed at the bottom of this section)

In Nevada County the Probation Department manages the Victim/Witness Advocacy Program. This unit assists victims of violent crimes in obtaining restitution, coordinates witness appearances and handles counseling and referral information.
