The alcohol-impaired driver continues to take up a significant amount of the time of the Nevada County Criminal Justice System. In Nevada City, the court now has a special arraignment calendar every Friday morning devoted to driving under the influence cases. Over 600 driving under the influence cases are referred to the Nevada County District Attorney's Office every year by the California Highway Patrol, Nevada County Sheriff, Grass Valley Police, and Nevada City Police.

Since 1993, a $1.00 surcharge on vehicle registration fees (est. $102,000 in fiscal 2000/2001) supports the prosecution of the crimes of auto theft, driving under the influence, and vehicle manslaughter in Nevada County.
