The Town of Truckee is 57 miles east of Nevada City, roughly a one-hour drive. In recent years the population of eastern Nevada County has grown significantly. The Superior Court Department in Truckee is a full time Court handling civil and family law matters as well as juvenile and criminal matters. As a result a full time Deputy District Attorney is needed to handle criminal and juvenile delinquency matters.
The Deputy District Attorney assigned to Truckee carries a caseload that is heavier than any other attorney in the Nevada County District Attorney's Office. In fiscal 98/99 the DDA III in Truckee handled 128 felonies, 609 misdemeanors and 53 juvenile petitions, a total of 790 cases. In 1998 and 1999, the DDA III in Truckee tried more jury trials than any other DDA in Nevada City. In Nevada City, there are 7 DDA's for 3 criminal courts and one juvenile court; that's an average of 1.75 DDA's per court.
From time to time attorneys in the Nevada City Office travel to Truckee to assist the Deputy District Attorney assigned to that court. The Board of Supervisors approved funding for fiscal 2000/2001 for a part-time temporary attorney to assist the Deputy District Attorney in Truckee.
With the exception of selected murder, child abuse, statutory rape and violence against women cases, the Deputy District Attorney assigned to Truckee is responsible for all cases originating in Truckee.
