
Purpose & Goals
The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office has two separate investigative units in Nevada City: Crimes Against Persons and Property ( CAPP), and the Narcotics Task Force. Both units are under the overall command of an Investigation’s Lieutenant. Each unit is directly supervised by a sergeant.
The CAPP Unit investigates crimes against persons and/or property. This unit investigates: child abuse, sex crimes, sex registrants, assaults, kidnappings, murders, thefts, burglaries, embezzlements, frauds, elder abuse, missing persons and coroner cases to name a few.
The CAPP Unit is comprised of one sergeant, five investigators and an office assistant. Investigators prepare cases for trial for the District Attorney’s Office and sit as Investigative Officers for the DA during trial, Additional duties of our investigators concerns licensing of pawn and second hand dealers and confirming they are in compliance with state and local codes.
The Narcotics Task Force is a multi-agency unit supervised by the Sheriff’s Department. The unit receives funding from the federal government via the Edward Byrne Grant. The unit is tasked with investigating 1) narcotics trafficking, 2) the manufacturing of controlled substances and 3) the cultivation of illegal marijuana. The task force also helps the CAPP Unit when necessary, and visa versa.
Both the CAPP Unit and the Narcotics Task Force have investigative responsibilities for the western and eastern ends of the county. The Narcotics Task Force, in conjunction with the respective police departments of the three incorporated cities, investigates narcotics related offenses.
