Search & Rescue Team

Mission Statement
The state of California mandates that the Sheriff of Nevada County shall have the responsibility to search for lost persons and evacuate the injured or ill (California Government Code sections 26614 and 26614.5). The Board of Supervisors has authorized the Sheriff of Nevada County to conduct search and rescue activities within the County of Nevada.
Services to Citizens
- To give appropriate priority to the protection of human life
- To find and provide necessary medical care to subjects in distress
- To evacuate subjects as necessary
The Nevada County Sheriff Search and Rescue Team (SAR) are highly trained and accomplished volunteers and canines that are often times sent statewide for mutual aide missions and or disasters. The SAR team constantly trains to be "ever-ready" for emergencies that occur at any hour, in any weather and any place in our county. The team is staffed with approximately 120 professional volunteers Once members have qualified as "ground searchers," they may specialize into a variety of areas including Incident Command, dog rescue team, mounted team, ATV team, hasty team, tracking team, crisis team, support team, ropes team or snow team. Every member’s role is to provide adequate search resources and knowledge to assist in county and state disasters.The Nevada County SAR Team averages 40 missions per year. These missions are very diverse and often times require one or all of the specialized teams to effectively and successfully locate lost persons. The SAR Team searches for lost persons such as overdue hikers, hunters and mountain bikers. They also search for lost persons with mental or developmental disabilities such as Alzheimer’s, Dementia and any other disability that may make the lost person at risk. There are also Nordic missions for skiers, snowshoe hikers and snowmobiles that become lost or disoriented in extreme weather conditions. The SAR Team also assists investigative agencies in evidence searches.
SAR has approximately 20 qualified canines for a variety of search disciplines. The canines are trained in areas such as victim trailing, area searching, gun locating, cadaver dogs (scent tracking) and cadaver water dogs (scent tracking in and under water).
The Nevada County Search and Rescue Team operates on a Volunteer basis. These individuals are dedicated to assist the Sheriff’s Office at a moments notice. This team is an essential tool in the successful operation of a search and rescue missions in our county.
