General Information

History

The Wayne Brown Correctional Facility was dedicated December 17, 1991. It is Corrections Standards Authority rated to house 250 inmates and is designed to be expanded to house 450 inmates. The facility is designed to house maximum, medium, and minimum-security inmates. Generally persons pending court processes or sentenced to one year or less for misdemeanor crimes are housed in the County Jail. Persons sentenced to more than one year are transferred to a state prison. Every person housed in a state prison was held in a county jail first. Inmates who have been sentenced to the County Jail and who meet the criteria to be housed in minimum security, may be assigned to work on government projects or for local non-profit organizations.

The Wayne Brown Correctional Facility is inspected annually by the Nevada County Civil Grand Jury, Fire Marshall, Health Department and Environmental Health; and by the Corrections Standards Authority semi-annually.

Goals

The goals of the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility are:
  • To provide adequate professional staffing at all times
  • To provide safe and secure housing of inmates
  • To maintain a safe working environment for staff


Organization

The Jail Commander, a Sheriff’s Captain, directs and oversees the facility with a sworn Lieutenant as an executive officer and a Correctional Lieutenant who is in charge of day-to-day jail operations.

The Captain is responsible for the overall operation of the Corrections Division including all jails, holding facilities, inmate transportation and court security in the county.

The Executive Lieutenant handles all budget matters , kitchen, laundry facilities, maintenance, and clerical staff. The Correctional Lieutenant handles staffing, training, inmate discipline and the day-to-day operation of the facility.


Capacity

The Wayne Brown Correctional Facility is a Type II facility that houses individuals pending arraignment, during trial, and upon sentence of commitment. The facility has the capability to house 250 inmates.

The jail facility provides to the community over 12,000 hours of inmate labor to various government agencies and nonprofit organizations each year.


Budget

The budget for the Corrections Division for Fiscal Year 2007-08 is $11,000,000.
